very old jello desert

My mother used to make this wierd desert. It was something like Cottage cheese, Jello POWDER and  ......I think cool whip.

Has anyone else heard of this? If so, remind me how to make it.

Re: very old jello desert

Here are two Jello salads that were very popular years ago. I still love both.

Lime Jello Salad

1 3oz box lime Jello
1 cup boiling water
3/4 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup celery, diced
1/2 cup pecans, chopped
1/3 cup milk
2 tbsp sugar
1 small can pineapple, crushed or tidbits
1 cup cottage cheese

Combine Jello powder and boiling water, stirring until dissolved. Cool to room temperature.
When cool, add mayonnaise, celery, pecans, milk, sugar and pineapple with juice. Stir until smooth. Fold in cottage cheese. Pour into an 8x8 or similar serving dish. Refrigerate until firm. Pretty when cut in squares and served on bed of lettuce.

Orange Salad

1 (16 ounce) tub Cool Whip
1 (7 ounce) box orange Jello, dry
1 (16 ounce) carton cottage cheese
1 (16 ounce) can crushed pineapple, drained
1 (16 ounce) can Mandarin oranges, drained
1 cup chopped pecans

Mix ingredients and refrigerate.
* Pretty when served on lettuce and garnished with thin orange slice.

Re: very old jello desert

You have the basics!

Cottage Cheese

Cool Whip

Jello (most prefer lime or orange)

mandarin oranges (drained)

crushed pineapple (drained)

Optional (Walnuts)

Combine all ingrediants together and refrigerate!

This is very refreshing for summer time.  Many people that don't like cottage cheese actually like this one!

Re: very old jello desert

My Grandmother passed down this jello salad/dessert that was a Thanksgiving tradition, and the only name we ever had for it was pink salad.  It was made with cottage cheese, evaporated milk, chopped maraschino cherries, crushed pineapple, cherry jello.  Over the years I have also made the same recipe but with green maraschino cherries and lime jello.  Does this sound like the recipe you are looking for?  I'll check back later on this msg board, and if you want it I'll post it.  I'm at work right now so I don't have access to the recipe.

Re: very old jello desert

This is delish & easy. When I got the recipe back in 1981 we were ststioned at Elmendorf AFB. It was called Watergate Salad & made with green Jello. I don't get the relationship with Nixon, but it is good ^_^. Gabbinwithu has the recipe I used to make.

Re: very old jello desert

Hi shurlock2,  I know what your talking about, I used to make that a lot and my youngest sister, loved it and would ask me to make it for family gatherings, I had forgotten about it. The basic ingredents are: 1 lg. cottage cheese, add 1 sm. box of jello (any flavor) blend well then add 1 can well drained crushed pineapple, blend, then add the 1- 12 oz. cool whip last, chill overnight. I have added other thing, as already mentioned, but that's the basic. Let us know what you think,Smile

Here's my mother's recipe

JELL-O COTTAGE CHEESE SALAD

12 ounces cottage cheese 1-no.2 can crushed pineapple
16 marshmallow cut up (or the equivelent in mini marshmallows
1 cup of mayonaise.  Maraschino cherries (optional)

Mix together and refrigerate till set.

Or maybe this might be one that your mother made.

PINEAPPLE AND CREAM CHEESE SALAD

1 pkg. lime gelatin    2 small pkg. cream cheese
1 C. boiling water      1C.cream, whipped
1C.cold water            3T.chopped pimiento
1tsp. salt                   1/2 cup crushed pineapple

Dissolve gelatin in the boiling water, add cold water and salt.  Chill. Mash cream chees and beat into gelatin. When it begins to thicken Fold in whipped cream, pimiento, and pineapple. Pour into square pan---chill till firm.

Cut into slices or squares. Serves about 10

The first time you chill it  the mixture will still be liquid, but cool.

This recipe is from the 40's or 50's

Enjoy

Re: very old jello desert

Or, I remember the basics above, but instead of the dry jello, use dry pistachio pudding mix.

Re: very old jello desert

I make this salad/ dessert a lot!  I use orange sugar free jello, pur it on top of about 1 and 1/2 cups cottage cheese and stir together.  Add a can of mandarin oranges that have been drained and also stir in a carton of fat free cool whip.  It is yummy!  enjoy!
